Hi, I’m Bob Perfect and this is my website. Welcome.
Who am I?
Well, I’m a human being, goddammit. My life has value. But beyond that, I’ve mostly contributed to society by writing about music, art and pop culture, performing stand-up comedy, organising music and comedy events, and hosting The Almost Perfect Podcast.
I used to be the features writer for Bubblegum Club, and helped expose South African artists to international audiences with my contributions to Noisey, Afropunk, Hypebeast, and OkayAfrica. I’ve also been a hired pen for Mail & Guardian, Red Bull, Shelflife, Discovery Vitality, and Woolworths Taste (which is my only bit of writing that my mom has read).
This all came off of founding a blog called Durban is Yours with some friends that became a cultural cornerstone in South African media by shining a light on underground Durban and South African culture. We won a blog award, got threatened to be sued multiple times, and earned millions of views over 7 years of being an independently run media enterprise.
Too bad nobody reads anymore, so in 2018, after 2 years of being a radio presenter on Durban Youth Radio, and years of being inspired by WTF with Marc Maron, I started up The Almost Perfect Podcast as a way to adapt to the ever-evolving media landscape. Since then, I’ve done nearly 200 interviews with some of the most important cultural figures in South African art and entertainment. I’ve had candid conversations with the likes of Loyiso Gola, Moonchild Sanelly, Spoek Mathambo, PJ Black, Muzi, Loyiso Madinga, Desire Marea, Schalk Bezuidenhout, Khensani Mohlatlole, Majozi, Jabu Newman, Dillan Oliphant, Lindy Johnson, Mojak Lehoko, Conrad Koch, and many more.
I’ve also organised hundreds of comedy and music gigs, and I was the founder and director of The Heat City Comedy Festival which started in 2017 but unfortunately didn’t survive past COVID in 2020. I have worked behind the scenes of major festivals as a booker and promoter for various stages at Splashy Fen, Outland Festival, and Zakifo. I also booked and managed the comedy programme for the Point Waterfront Arts Festival in 2022, and was the Event Coordinator for Winston Fest 2024.
I’m also the co-founder of Not Quite Right Comedy, which we built into Durban’s most prolific comedy production company. I have since moved to Cape Town and handed over the reigns to the rest of the team who have consistently grown from strength to strength.
As a comedian, I’m known for my pop-culture-fuelled misanthropic takes on modern life and have over a decade of telling jokes under my belt, regularly performing on stages across the country including SA’s top clubs and dingiest dive bars. At this point, I’ve performed pretty much everywhere with pretty much everyone in the South African comedy scene.
