Sabelo Mkhabela is one of my favourite music journalists in South Africa. His deep well of knowledge and insight into hip-hop, and the way he breaks it all down, make him a valuable asset to the OkayAfrica team. He’s clearly very passionate about hip-hop, but it takes more than passion to cut it as a music journalist in the click-bait era. Sabelo is a well-rounded writer who has steadily contributed to the culture for a minute now. He’s also an empathetic and considerate editor that ensures he gets the best work from his writers.
In this podcast, we get into all kinds of discussions about hip-hop and local music journalism. From the future of the written word to why the public always wants to put rappers up against each other. Sabelo is completely candid which is welcomed and makes for an honest and insightful chat. Enjoy.
